Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the skin that causes scaling, flaking, and itch of affected areas. It is caused by fungi in the genus Trichophyton and is typically transmitted in moist areas where people walk barefoot, such as showers or bathhouses. Although the condition typically affects the feet, it can spread to other areas of the body, including the groin. Athlete’s foot can be treated by a number of pharmaceutical and other treatments.

        Cure Athlete’s Foot
Learn about cure of athlete’s foot. Athlete’s foot is a parasitic fungal infection of the epidermis of the human foot. The term "athlete’s foot" refers to the disease and not the organism (fungus) that causes it. Several different fungi, called dermatophytes, can cause tinea pedis. Moreover, a fungi species that causes athlete’s foot can also cause, for example, jock itch (tinea cruris). It is typically caused by a mould (but in some cases a yeast) that grows on the surface of the skin and then into the living skin tissue itself, causing the infection. It usually occurs between the toes, but in severely lasting cases may appear as an extensive "moccasin" pattern on the bottom and sides of the foot. The malady more commonly affects males than females. Tinea pedis is estimated to be the second most common skin disease in the United States, after acne. Up to 15% of the U.S. population may have tinea pedis.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a tick-borne bacterial disease that affects the cells in the lining of your blood vessels, making the vessels leak. This can eventually cause serious damage to internal organs, particularly your kidneys.

Although it was first identified in the Rocky Mountains, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF)is most commonly found in the southeastern part of the United States. It also occurs in parts of Canada, Mexico, Central America and South America.

Early signs and symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) include severe headache and high fever. A few days later, a rash usually appears on the wrists and ankles. Rocky Mountain spotted fever responds well to prompt treatment with antibiotics. If left untreated, however, the disease can cause serious complications and even death.

The first symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) typically begin 2-14 days after the bite of an infected tick. A tick bite is usually painless and about half of the people who develop RMSF do not remember being bitten. The disease frequently begins as a sudden onset of fever and headache and most people visit a healthcare provider during the first few days of symptoms. Because early symptoms may be non-specific, several visits may occur before the diagnosis of RMSF is made and correct treatment begins. The following is a list of symptoms commonly seen with this disease, however, it is important to note that few people with the disease will develop all symptoms, and the number and combination of symptoms varies greatly from person to person.

Rubella, is a mild viral disease. It is moderately contagious and is spread by respiratory droplets during coughing, sneezing, and talking. Once infected, the individual has lifelong immunity to the disease. The most important aspect of rubella is the high incidence of birth defects (up to 65% of infants) if the mother is infected during the first or second trimester of her pregnancy. This syndrome of birth defects is called congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) and can result in spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), abnormally small head (microcephaly), mental retardation, congenital heart defects, cataracts, blindness, and hearing impairment. Individuals with immune system impairment (those with AIDS, autoimmune diseases, or on chemotherapy) are also at greater risk for acquiring rubella.

        What is Rubella?
German measles, is a disease caused by the rubella virus. The name "rubella" is derived from Latin, meaning little red. Rubella is also known as German measles because the disease was first described by German physicians in the mid-eighteenth century. This disease is often mild and attacks often pass unnoticed. The disease can last one to three days. Children recover more quickly than adults. Infection of the mother by Rubella virus during pregnancy can be serious; if the mother is infected within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the child may be born with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which entails a range of serious incurable illnesses. Spontaneous abortion occurs in up to 20% of cases.

There is no medicine that will kill stomach flu viruses (antibiotics are not effective against viral infections). Therefore, stomach flu treatment goals are focused on providing supportive care while the body fights the stomach flu. Supportive care involves treating symptoms, such as dehydration, that can occur as a result of the stomach flu.

        H3N2
After last year’s H1N1 flu pandemic, local health officials are keeping a close eye on how this season’s virus is starting to spread. October marks the start of the flu season in Indiana, though Hoosiers aren’t typically hit hard until January or February.

Allen County Health Commissioner Dr. Deb McMahan says doctors are tracking three strains of the flu virus this year: H1N1, H3N2, and an influenza group B virus.

The good news is that this year’s vaccine protects against all three strains and it’s already widely available. The vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older, including people who are not usually considered high-risk.

"So many people actually have influenza and don’t know they have it. So they’re going to work, whether they work as a health care provider or they work in a daycare or school or wherever and they’re transmitting it to other people, and they don’t even know they have it," said Dr. Deb McMahan. "So the best way to avoid it is just to prevent it in the first place."

Learn about treatment of microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure that uses a spray of microcrystals to remove the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells and reveal younger, healthier-looking skin. Microdermabrasion also encourages the production of a new underlying layer of skin cells with higher levels of collagen and elastin, which further improves your skin’s appearance. Microdermabrasion is much gentler than dermabrasion. Dermabrasion is a more intensive procedure used to treat deeper facial lines, extreme sun damage, and scars.

        Respiratory Protection for Healthcare Workers
The video explains the proper use of respirators and the procedures to follow to assure that respirators protect workers from airborne hazards in healthcare settings. This 33-minute video explains the major components of a respiratory protection program including fit-testing, medical evaluations, training, and maintenance. The video also discusses the difference between respirators and surgical masks, and features a segment on common respiratory hazards found in healthcare settings, including airborne infectious agents that cause diseases such as tuberculosis, pandemic influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), chicken pox, and measles. Demonstrations also show how respirator use helps protect workers from exposure to airborne chemical hazards such as formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde, which are used commonly in hospital laboratories to preserve tissue samples for medical analysis. These toxic substances can cause eye and nasal irritation, headaches, asthma, and other symptoms. Additionally, formaldehyde is a carcinogen and has been linked to nasal and lung cancer, with possible links to brain cancer and leukemia. "Employers can’t rely on respirators providing the expected protection if they don’t train their workers on how to use them properly," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. "This video is an important training tool that teaches proper respirator use and discusses employers’ responsibilities under OSHA’s respiratory protection standard.
